More roads for Scotland Industrial Waste but Forth bridge delayed

set to go under • A package of immediate improvements to roads in Scotland was announced last week by secretary of state for Scotland Ian Lang.
But at the same time Lang decided to postpone for two years a public inquiry into the building of a second road bridge across the Firth of Forth.
The new schemes will be: • A new underpass to the join the M8 to M9 at the Newbridge roundabout; • Improvements to the Halbeath junction of the A92 with the M90; • The case for a bypass at Rosyth will be examined "as a priority".
There will also be moves towards transferring enforcement of parking regulations from the police to local authorities and further examination of different toll levels for peak and non-peak use and automatic collection on the existing Forth Road Bridge. Hauliers have attacked the delay in the public inquiry. Ian Pollock, managing director of Musselburgh-based Pollock (Scotrans) calls the improvements announced last week "piecemeal".
"The two years to be spent preparing for the eventual public inquiry could be better used for a detailed consideration of the fundamental needs of the whole roads infrastructure in Scotland," he says.
