LONDON'S first purpose-buill and strategically placed majoi lorry park could be opened al Beckton in the East EniJ within three years.
The lorry park is a join1 Greater London Council anc London Borough of Newharr plan, said to be a "splendic example of Co-operation be tween two public authorities" Under the plan the GLC would finance a £500,00( access road, to the nine-acr( site and the Borough woulc construct the 250-vehicle sit( and 150-bed driver hostel. II would be just off the At London-Tilbury road, close tr the North Circular.
Chairman of the GLC Nord Planning Committee said: "I' may also be possible to expanc the range of services on th( site to include repair work shops, trailer-swap arrange ments and possibly facilitie: for bigger loads to be split int( more manageable sizes".
The GLC has approved tho plan and it now remains fo the Borough of Newham t( pass it and establish firme plans with an interested deve loper.
