Why the Tubes Fill.

The London Bridge-Turnham Green motorbus service of the L.G.O. Co. is poorly maintained, and we continue to receive complaints from readers with regard to it. They particularly deplore that in the micidle of the evening it is no uncommon thing to have to wait for 25 minutes in Holborn Circus for an east-bound bus on that route. A member of the " C.M." staff on Monday last tested this complaint and waited 20 minutes before a vehicle arrived, and his request to the conductor for information as to the delay, elicited the reply, " Twenty minutes, is that all?" Sympathetic, but not explanatory!

Even the Clocks Stopped.

'All their eggs in one basket " was our comment in an editorial which we published in our issue for the 8th of October, 1908. On that occasion we drew attention to the serious inconvenience to the public which resulted whenever the central power-generating. station for London's network of tubes. failed. For 35 minutes on Sunday again, the whole of the organization of many of London's underground railways was brought to a standstill, owing to the breakage. of a main steam pipe in the power station at Chelsea. Lifts, trains and clocks came to a. standstill and all the electric lights were extinguished. It is a good thing. that this did not happen at a time when the tubes are crowded to twice their licensed capacity. Imagine 35. minutes in a City and South London carriage, which is built for 32 passengers, and which, in crush times, always carries 16 additional strap-hangers and 10 or 12 people in the caged platform suspended between the carriages. What a holocaust there will be some day on this line if a collision takes. place at crush times.
