Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1 HAD TO respond to Dick Flute's column that criticised the Driver CPC (Me Driver CPC has been devised by those a long way away from our trade', CM 8 January).

As you'll know, the Driver CPC was introduced last September for bus and coach drivers, with the introduction for lorry drivers due to follow this September.

At time of writing, 2,472 bus and coach drivers have already gained their Driver CPC out of the 3,027 who have taken it.

The new directive brings a compulsory initial qualification and a subsequent periodic training regime that people have to follow, before being able to drive for a living. All members of the European Union are required to have a Driver CPC scheme.

Road safety

"lbe Driver CPC is designed to make a contribution to improving road safety and will ensure drivers are better skilled and kept up to date on new developments.

As a road safety agency, the DSA is committed to reducing the number of road deaths and accidents and the Driver CPC will help us achieve this. We accept that there has been criticism over the introduction of the Driver CPC, hut we believe it can only benefit the industry We consulted with the industry to ensure that we delivered a flexible and practical qualification.

Skills for Logistics and Go Skills are responsible for the approval of periodic training centres and courses under the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT), but we're responsible for auditing compliance and making sure the high standards established are maintained.

The benefits include flexible and tailored training that meets the needs of both drivers and businesses. Periodic training is designed to complement the individual driver's work and be relevant to their everyday job. There are no tests to pass — it is a practical hands-on assessment.

Green issues

There are also economic and environmental benefits. The Driver CPC covers fuel-efficient driving, legal requirements health and safety, defensive driving, first aid, health and safety, driver's hours rules and tachographs, changing regulations etc. Competence will improve, there will be better road safety, fewer accidents, reduced insurance premiums and downtime, CO, emissions will fall and more fuel will be saved.

Drivers are skilled professionals, operating very expensive vehicles. We want them to have access to the training they need to keep them safe, while also keeping other road users safe, too. • • For more on the Driver CPC, telephone 0300 200 1122 or email eustomer.services@dsa.gsi.gov.tik
