Each week CM pops into dealerships up and down the country to see what's on the forecourt After a closer inspection, we nip around the block and give you the low down.

This week's Taking Stock looks at one of the mainstays of the British road transport network. The Iveco Cargo is the prime mover of the 7.5-tonne sector and picking one up from an Iveco-registered dealership or an independent is no problem as there are plenty to go round.

Specification Volume might well affect the price but quality and durability seem unaffected.Y699 BVN comes straight back from rental company Arriva and its registration plate denotes a north-east origin.

The specilication is as generic and standard as you are likely to find. This 75E15S has a 201t body with Del Super Loader one-tonne column tail-lift, aluminium floor.4.45m wheelbase and a day cab. Overall height is 3.5m. It's short on added extras; there is no air management kit, just two obligatory wing mirrors; and the driver doesn't get a seat belt. It's a three-seater truck with a two-seater bench for the passengers. The only seatbelt we could find was the one for the person who sits in the middle. The material on the seats is the green/blue/red with grey background — classic 1990s.

Registered in November 2000, it has returned to the Used Truck Centre (UTC) at Middlewich on a three-year buy back with several other identical vehicles.

It has a six-cylinder Euro-2 150hp engine with a live-speed transmission and has done 102,000km.

The UTC has given it a quick service but no refurbishment work will be done until it's sold. Guarantees include a six-month full warranty,as well as a full service, and first quarter buyers can get a 3% flat rate finance package.

Driving impressions On the road Y699 BVN produces a sound drive. It's got functional written all over it. From cold the gears are a little sticky but once warmed up the five-speed is very smooth.Acceleration through the bo) is responsive and we were well into the mini -test route" before we knew it.

Vision back down the side of the vehicle is good, although the blind spots around the cab, especially the near-side, are a little unnerving with tight reversing or manoeuvring procedure t around the yard.

The cab is clean with no signs of abuse or damage. The dealership handles a lot of rental trucks and it is always impressed by the quality of what is perceived to be a vehicle heavily abused by uncaring drivers during its first life. None of the major components such as the clutch or gearbox. or important kit such as brake linings, have been replaced.

In the tradition of the rental companies, this week's subject has a white cab, with a white body and white tail-lift.The all important price tag has been quoted at £10,650 (ex-VAT) which is just about bang on with CAP's recommended retail price.

Conclusion The mileage is relatively low, reflecting the local work that this spec of vehicle is more than likely to have done. It is clean inside the cab and, apart from a very slightly bent safety side rail running down the driver's side under the box, the outside is in good condition as well.

The engine sounds healthy and throughout our short trip it responded well to our limited demands. Transmission warmed up quickly but it's a shame there's no air management kit. Also, an extra couple of mirrors on the passenger's side would improve any close manoeuvring executions. The price is in keeping with CAFt which means Y699 BVN should represent a good deal for its second owner. •
