TANWORTH IN ARDEN operator Steve Benton Transport has had its fleet of 54 vehicles slashed by West Midland Traffic Commissioner David Dixon.

Police and VOSA officers raided the company in December 2001 following an accident in which one of its drivers was killed.

Driver Steven Machin's truck ran into the back of a stationary artic on the motorway — his family alleged that Benton's drivers were driving excessive hours, taking insufficient rest and driving without tachograph charts. The resulting investigation led to several drivers being convicted of tachograph and hours offences.

Benton himself was initially convicted of 41 offences of failing to produce tachograph records but those convictions were quashed on a technicality. Following a twoday disciplinary hearing the TC had reserved his decision on action to take against Ber 0-licence.
