Cn reading the article "A fair day's pay" (CM 5-11 Feb), I would like to say my company would be very happy if we could pay such "paltry wages"--2150 for 40 hours, or 23.75 per hour. On a single man's code of 404L, this makes the take-home pay 21 25, This enables employees to obtain the perks of Government benefits and reduced contributions paid by these low-paying employers. Last June we advertised for Class 3 drivers for local work at 25 per hour with double time on Saturdays. We had no replies, so I think Robin Ramage is a very fortunate man to employ drivers at this rate of pay.
My 16-year-old daughter earns 24 per Hour at McDonalds and my house cleaner takes home 24.25 per hour. As for the Government subsidising LGV licences, why doesn't industry just pay an attractive wage in the first place? Either the transport industry is being screwed down by its customers or the transport industry is screwing the drivers down to enable it to pass perks back to the customers.
Either way, if Mr Ramage does not pay the extra wages and his customers do not bear the cost, then the goods will remain in the warehouse.
