• More women than ever are becoming truck drivers, with many taking advantage of the increasing number of vacancies available with driver agencies. Transport recruiter Driver Hire Nationwide says the image of the check-skirted trucker eating in greasy cafes and sleeping in a cab full of furry dice and "artistic" girlie calendars is no longer accurate. Women appear to be taking advantage of companies which want to cut their permanent staff; they find temporary driving jobs are convenient. Driver Hire says women excel in client liaison, are conscientious and "put men to shame when it comes to looking after their vehicles".
