Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by David Craik • Thames Valley police are hunting for a con-man targeting truck dealers who borrows demonstrator vehicles using fake insurance and then disappears.

Sergeant David Valentine says that on 3 December 1997 a Buckinghamshire dealer was approached by a man calling himself Tony Greenway who claimed to be from Greenway Landscapes and Tree Surgery Department of 44 Newcombe Road, Luton.

Ile said that he wanted to use a white demonstration lveco and, if he liked it, would buy up to 100 more.

The supplier insisted on seeing a certificate of insurance. A fax was duly received and enquiries with a large insurance company confirmed that the vehicle was covered.

Valentine says the suspect, who also used the name David Clarke, faxed the supplier saying the vehicle would be paid for. Police believe that this was simply a ploy to delay the report of the theft.

Valentine has produced a list of telephone numbers that appeared on documentation from Greenway/Clarke: 0958 725229; 0800 801030; 0181 385 1722; 0181 385 1293 (fax); and 0126 8561127. He believes another similar crime has been can-ied out in Ipswich.

Anyone with information on this or similar incidents should call Sgt Valentine on 01494 465888, extn 6633.
