Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new international road transport company commences operations on Monday with 500 semi-trailers and containers immediately available. The company has been formed by Ralph Hilton Transport Ltd and Mann and Son (London) Ltd who are both based in the Charlton area of London and will be operating initially from HIS, a subsidiary of the Ralph Hilton group. The capital investment_ was approximately £500,000, half of which is in equipment.

The semi-trailers and containers were previously part of Mann and Son's equipment which it used in conjunction with its roll-on ferry services between Harwich and Bremerhaven. The new company—Hilton International (Transport) Ltd—will not be confined to Harwich but will be able to use any port for its movements. It is understood that when Harwich is used this will be for unaccompanied traffic to northern Europe and that on the short cross Channel runs all traffic will be accompanied.

A spokesman for the new company told CM this week it is planned to set up depots in Europe. Mr R. Hilton is company chairman and Mr C. Mann the managing director. Ralph Hilton group has a 51 per cent holding, Mann and Son a 49 per cent. To support the semi-trailer operation the Hilton Group has an order placed for 200 Seddon tractive units and is engaged in a recruitment programme. The chairman said that finding drivers with a Class 1 licence and Continental operating experience was expected to present problems but the company was prepared to embark on an intensive Continental training programme if this proved necessary. The new acquisition brings the strength of the Hilton group up to about 1200 vehicles.
