Trancosteel interlocking rings are made by the Farnborough Engineering Co , Ltd., Farnborough, Kent, and are claimed to reduce oil and petrol consumption and to improve power. Tests carried out by Bournemouth Corporation Transport Services with an A.E.C. engine, in which two of these rings were fitted to each piston ' at a time in the life of the' vehicle when the bore wear was 0.01 in. and the oil consumption 360 m.p.g., revealed the following facts: that consumption fell to 2,000 m.p.g., rising, after 14,000 miles, to 1,700 m.p.g.
and, after 19,000 miles, to only 1,200 m.p.g., and that wear had increased, after 14,000 miles, from 0.01 to 0.0105 in.
When labour, machinery, fuel .and lubricant are all in short supply, yet transport must be maintained at the highest possible pitch of efficiency, any means for curing mechanical ailments without expensive overhauling, constitute a contribution to the war effort.
