The Scottish A.C. Dinner.

The claims and coming predominance of the commercial motor were favourite themes with speakers at the annual dinner of the Scottish Automobile Club on Monday night last. The views of road authorities were put forward more particularly by Sir John Primrose, Sir J. Patten MacDougall, and Sir Sohn Munro, whilst Sir John Macdonald and Mr. Shrapnell-Smith, in the course of their shares of the replies to the toasts of " Automobilisrn " and " Our Guests " respectively, voiced the views of motorists and owners of business vehicles. Sir T. H. D. Berridge, speaking on behalf of the R.A.C., stated that the intelligence of the committee of that body was now being directed to the furtherance of proposals for the constitution of a. national road department; this would probably have to be a branch of one of the existing State departments such as the Local Government Board, and its functions would include the apportionment of national grants between local authorities according lo the nature of the circumstances in each case. We shall deal more fully with the proceedings in our next issue. REMINDERS.
