Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Our readers will be informed by the Editor on any points connected with the construction or use of commercial motors. Where a direct reply is desired, a stamped and addressed envelope should be enclosed ; if a request for privacy is not specially made, any query and answer may be published. Some replies, owing to pressure on our space, are held several weeks. Numerous requests leach us for lists of motoreab and commercial-vehicle owners ; these we never supply. Our advertisement columns are open to those who desire to make announcements to owners for the purposes of trade.

How to Run a Motorcab Business.

[2319] (Ignorant).—This is eminently a question on which expert advice should be given for a ice, and we suggest that you retain and pay an engineer. As a matter of fact, you will find "Answers to Queries" which meet some of your many requirements in our issues of the 20th November and 11th December last.

Loads of 7 cwt. by Ford Vans.

[2320] (Oldham).—We cannot give any useful information about second-hand cars in the absence of an inspection. The weight which is mentioned (7 cwt.) is on many roads found to he too much for a Ford chassis, unless you refer to the total imposed load, and not to the net load. The mileage which you mention (60 miles per week) is extremely low, but you might find that it would extend.

Working Costs for Electric Vehicles.

[2321] (Yorks).—We are not prepared to supply working costs for electric vehicles in England, as we are not satisfied that any such costs are yet demonstrated. Three makes of electric vehicles of capacities which may go so high as six tons are supplied by the following :--Edisurt Accumulators, Ltd., 19, Old Bond Street, W.; Conway Jenkins (Frani system), 175, Piccadilly, W. ; Massey and Co., Ltd. (Lloyd), 45, Horseferry Road, S.W.

Front-driven Systems.

[2322] (Horse-box).—The Mass tractor is built on the Besancon system. Another French system, with which there has been considerable experience, is that known as the Avant-train Latil, but we have no information at the moment as to how the English agency for the system stands. It was quite recently in the hands of the Renard-Latil people, and the last information available concerning their English address was as follows : Renard Commercial Motor Co., Ltd., 82, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W.

Setting Up as a Haulage Contractor.

[2323] (Salop).--Our sheet of working costs, which we have mailed to you, will give much of the information which you require. You may not use a tractor and two wagons, without registering under the Traction Engine Acts ; the Heavy Motor Car Order only allows the use of one wagon at a time. If. therefore, you wish to carry two truck-loads at a time, you will have either to register the tractor as a traction engine, or to purchase a steam wagon and use a trailer with it. Unless the roads are very soft or very had, this seems to be a good course. Working with, say, eight or nine tons of stone divided between the wagon and trailer, you, as a contractor, in order to cover all contingencies, ought to see an income of not less than is. 6d. per mile run, light and loaded mileage being added together. It will not pay satisfactorily at less than that. Thus, if a journey were four miles loaded and four miles empty, the eight miles of running would mean a necessary revenue of 12s. With an eight-ten lead, this would be is. 6d. per ton for the four-mile journey loaded.

el4 Makers of Time-wheeled Parcekars.

[2324] (Algiers).—Amongst the most reliable makers of three-wheeled parcelcars are :—Warrick and (Jo., Ltd., St. Mary's Butts, Reading ; Morgan Motor Co., Ltd., Worcester Road, Malvern ; A. W. Wall, Ltd., Roc Motor Works, Hay Mills, Birmingham ; -New Girling Commercial Cars, Ltd., 36 Long Acre, W.C. ; Alldays and Onions Pneumatic Engineering Co., Ltd., Birmingham ; Omnium Co., Ltd., 198, Great Portland Street, W. ; and Phanomobiles, Ltd., 328, Upper Street, N.

Three-ton Loads for a Brewery.

[2325] (Kent).—Work aggregating 10,000 miles of running per annum is a low average for a lorry in brewing service. On such low mileage you should see a revenue of is. 6d. per mile run, in order to make a satisfactory profit. If, however, you are particularly keen to get the work, and are prepared to take the risk that the journeys will aggregate more than 10,000 miles per annum, we recommend you to quote is. 4d. per mile run, with a minimum of £13 10s. per week, up to a mileage of 10,000 miles per annum, and Is. per mile for everything above it. The minimum is essential as a standing arrangement, and one week is not to be set off against another. These charges should, of course, only include the driver, and not any labour for delivery purposes.
