e; Up to 20% of all foreign-registered trucks crossing the Irish Sea were in such poor mechanical condition that they were given immediate prohibitions by Vehicle Inspectorate staff during a recent spot check.

On 5-8 December chocks were carried out on ports offering crossings to Ireland. Of the 531 CVs checked by vehicle examiners 170 were Issued with prohibitions (65 immediate. 105 delayed).

These included 124 foreign vehicles, of which 25 warranted Immediate prohibitions.

Traffic examiners looked at 585 vehicles, of which 237 were foreign vehicles. They Issued 96 prohibitions to drivers of foreign vehicles for hours, records and overloading offences. Of the 201 UK vehicles that were weighed, 26 were found to be overloaded and were served with prohibition notices; 17 prohibitions were issued for hours offences.
