Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Somerset 436 haulier had his

Operator's Licence revoked and was disqualified from holding a licence for three years when he appeared at a Bristol public inquiry before Western Traffic Commissioner John Mervyn Pugh.

David Salvidge, trading as CH Salvidge & Son was brought before the TC to answer allegations concerning a poor maintenance record.

The inquiry heard that Salvidge, based at Thornes Farm, Bicknoller near Taunton, had received five prohibitions between January 1992 and 1995, as well as three overloading offences and two convictions relating to driver's hour offences.

The inquiry heard that Salvidges' cattle haulage business had been badly affected by the BSE crisis and said he now proposed operating just one vehicle that was less than a year old.

Saividge had been warned about maintenance before and had attempted to put his house in order by hiring in outside contractors to carry it out on his behalf, he said. The inquiry heard Salvidge had received a prohibitkm notice just weeks after the outside contractor had been appointed.

Revoking the licence Mervyn Pugh said it was a very serious case and he had no alternative but to impose a ban He added that any future application for a licence by Salvidge should be heard at public inquiry
