Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• XL,y,braking and construction requirements come in for both light and heavy trailers on 1 January 1997, as part of revised Construction and Use regulations.

Every new lightweight trailer (weighing 750kg or less) will have to be fitted with a secondary safety coupling so that the trailer will not become detached if the main coupling fails. It must also be marked with its date of manufacture.

The existing British Standard BSAU 138a: 1980—covering self-sealing airline couplings on tractive units and prime movers---will be extended to heavy trailers; the revised LGV inspection manual to be issued next spring will include a mandatory inspection of airline couplings.
