• Preparations by the United Road Transport Union to set up a drivers agency are to start in earnest following a decision by the union's executive to endorse the plan.
The first batch of 25-30 drivers should be taken on in April, provided that the union can secure a Trades Union Congress loan and a number of employers continue to show interest in the scheme.
URTU hopes the agency will eventually generate sales of around 4/1m a year and that it will deliver around half of its profits back to drivers in the form of bonuses. Drivers will be employed full time by the agency and will pay income tax; they will receive holiday pay and a pension.
