NOW that the Government's White Paper on raising the tonnage of goods vehicles from 32 tons to 40 tons has been released, I am sure that the idea of a 4.2 metre height limit is a great mistake. This was all announced in Commercial Motor.
Europe has always had a disadvantage limit, as with highvolume, low-weight products it is necessary to obtain as much load volume area as possible. To allow a 40ft trailer, at a gross weight including tractive unit of 40 tons, only 4.2 metres maximum height, will only cause many lorries to run very under-loaded, thus defeating the object of the 40-ton lorry as more of them will be needed again.
Why not allow a five-metre limit as this is the unsigned maximum bridge height. D. C. QUINLAN Sevenoaks Kent
