Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IGHT undertakings, one of them

municipally owned, are proposing to revise their fares by eliminating id. units. The municipal undertaking, Dundee Corporation, and Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., are also seeking to establish a universal 2d. adult minimum single charge, whilst live of the company operators. Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., and its associated concerns, are proposing to maintain a Id. ticket for journeys up to 0.7 mile.

Dundee to Rationalize

Dundee proposes to rationalize the fares structure on the basis of fare stages of 0.66 mile. The minimum fare would thus be valid for two such stages, four would be covered by a 3d. ticket, seven for 4d., 10 for 5d. and 13 for 6d. Tram and bus fares are affected by the proposals. Since fares were last increased, costs have gone up by £94.000 a year. The new fares, if granted, would make it possible for the transport department to earn a small surplus next year if costs remained steady. This year, a deficit of £59,000 is expected.

Additional costs amounting to £115.800 a year since the last increase of charges, which had been expected to produce another £135,000 a year, have made inevitable further fares advances on Bristol city services. Bristol Tramways proposes to apply for permission to replace the present lid. minimum adult single fare by a 2d. one, to abolish the present 2id. ticket and to remove the remaining id. units from the fare tables, Workmen's fares are affected by the proposed change in the basic single rate, and the minimum workmen's fare will be 5d., instead of 4d., if the application succeeds. Some fares will be reduced, and the new charges are estimated to provide another £129,000 a year.

Big Northern Plan

A comprehensive plan to eliminate halfpennies is seen in the applications of Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., Sunderland District Omnibus Co,, Tynemouth and District Transport Co., Ltd., Tyneside Tramways and Tramroads Co., and Wakefields Motors, Ltd.

It is suggested that id. be added to all fares including an odd id. from Id. to 1 1 i., and Id, to even fares Id. to Is., lid, to odd fares from .1s. 00. to Is. hid., 2d. to even fares from Is. Id. to 2s., lid. and to odd fares up to 2s. llid , and 3d. to even fares up to 3s.

Forstages up to 0.7 mile the Id. ticket will be retained if the application is successful. The 2d. fare will remain for stages up to I i miles, the 3d. for 21-mile journeys, the 4d. for 3i miles, and a 3d. return fare will be instituted for journeys up to a mile where the present fare is lid, single. Return fares

A30

are subject to a similar series of proposals. About 340 services are affected.

Fourteen services arc concerned in the application of Hicks Bros., Ltd., Chelmsford, for permission to add id. to the 24d., 31d.., 41c1., and Sid. single tickets, to base return fares on 11 times the single rate and to revise single fares on two routes, in the main by adding Id. to the existing charges.

The addition of Id. to most ordinary and workmen's return fares, except

where charges are co-ordinated with those of other operators, is proposed by Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd. If the application is successful, some workmen's fares will be abolished.

Further adjustments to meet recent heavy increases in costs have been forecast by Southdown Motor Services, Ltd.

West Hartlepool is to apply for permission to raise the statutory maximum bus fare to 2d, a mile.
