News and Comment—con.

Messrs. Rush and Aloof, of 299, Piccadilly, W., have been appointed the West End agents for the Davis paraffin carburetter.

A Top-loading Device.

The van which we illustrate at the foot of this page is a 24 cwt. Lacre vehicle which has just been delivered. The body, which has been built by J. Liversidgeand Son, Ltd., has been fitted at the back with steps and handles, so that the roof is more easily accessible for top loading.

A Fourth Order.

Messrs. J. and W. Campbell and Company, wholesale warehousemen, of Glasgow, have placed their fourth order for an Albion commercial vehicle, and all these have been given during the past twelve months. This receipt of repeat orders at such regular intervals is good testimony to the satisfaction which the earlier deliveries are giving and proof of a saving in distribution expenses.

Trade Mark Action.

In the case of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft versus the Maja Concession Company, before Mr. Justice _Joyce, Mr. -Younger, K.C. (with whom was Mr. Martelli) appeared on behalf of the plaintiffs in support of a motion to restrain the defendants, the Maja Concession Company, until the trial of the action, from using the name " Mercedes," as distinctive of .motor vehicles made or sold by the defendants, and from infringing the plaintiffs' registered trade mark " Merckles." Mr. Sebastian, who appeared for the defendants, gave art undertaking on their behalf, in the terms of the notice of motion until the sittings of the Court in January, and the judge, by consent of the parties, ordered the motion to stand over until then.

"Giant' Spirit.

We are glad to learn from Mr. M. L. Eastern that he has started business under the tide of Eastern and Melville, Limited, at 85, Shaftesbury Avenue. The new company has the sole concession for London for the sale of " Giant " and " Arid l " motor spirit in tins, and it is also selling " Ilo " lubricating oil. Mr. Eastern is a live business man, with many friends in the motor trade, and he should rapidly add to the already considerable connection of Messrs. Meade-King, Robinson and Company in the south.

Leyland Petrol Vehicles.

Maple and Company, Limited, has, after a long and careful series of trials, placed an order for two petrol lorries, one each of 2 tons and 3 tons capacity, with the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, Limited, of Leyland. Mr. G. MacGregor Duncan, of 24, Old Oueen Street, has been the consulting engineer in this matter. We learn, Loo, that the Leyland Company has received an order for one of its 2-ton lorries from Hampton and Sons, Limited, of Pall Mall East. The works of this company were never busier than they are at the present time, both in the steam-lorry and petrol-vehicle branches, and their activity is largely due to repeat orders.

In the English edition of The Business Man's Magazine'' much of interest is to be found by those concerned in the business or works management of motor manufacturing concerns. Interesting examples of complete costing systems are given from month to month in this smartlyconducted paper.

Lacre Sales.

Recent business done by the Lacre Motor Car Company, Limited, includes : a third repeat order from Waterlow and Sons, Limited, for one of its 24 cwt, vans; for Messrs. A. Levett and Company, Limited, of Blackheath, a 2-ton van ; for Messrs. Hedges and Butler, of Regent Street, W., a I-ton van. Messrs. Lipton have also ordered a 24 cwt. van, and Messrs. Naylor, Tucker and Company, of Bristol, have purchased a 15 cwt. traveller's brougham. In addition to the above orders for Lacre vans, the company has secured an order from Lever Brothers, Limited, of Port Sunlight, for two, 3-ton, " J. and B. Lacre " vehicles. Another interesting order which is directly traceable to the successful Reading meet, in June last, is the purchase by Messrs. Heelas, Sons and Company, Reading, of a 24 cwt. Lacre van. The latest of all, for a oneton van, is from the Midland Railway Company.

A Newspaper Vehicle.

A striking proof of the utility of the

motor for commercial purposes, and especially for newspaper distribution, is given in the " Eastern Daily Press." The proprietors of that journal have for some five years been running a motor vehicle daily to Lynn and back, starting from Norwich about 2.30 a.m., with supplies of the paper, which by these means have been placed on ihe breakfast table of readers in more than a hundred towns and villages in West Norfolk. There were a few troubles due partly to inexperience at the start, but these were soon overcome, and the record for the present year is a remarkable one. From January 3rd to November 3oth, the " Siddeley " car which is being used, has travelled more than 25,oao miles. Out of a possible 284, it has actually made 275 successful journeys. On six. out of the nine occasions on which failure or partial failure occurred, there was a dense fog, twice there were tire troubles, and on one occasion a chain failed. From February 13th till October 8th (eight months), there was an absolutely clean record. The history of the period of working may be summarised thus :— Maximum number of days, 284. Rail and mail connections made, 275.

Successful journeys, 96.83 per cent.

Service wholly failed (fog), 3. Partial failure due to fog, 3. Partial failure due to tires, 2. Partial failure due to machinery, r. Total mileage run, 25,00o.

Such 'a record, besides speaking well both for the quality of the " Siddeley " car and the grit of the driver, affords convincing proof of the utility and practical merits of the motor for newspaper work.
