BOSSES AT SOUTHAMPTON Container Terminal claim that it is now the most efficient container terminal in the UK following improvements designed to end months of delays for operators.

Derek Smith, business development manager at SCT, says it has fulfilled all the promises it made at the beginning of the year to focus on road haulage and deal with all trucks within an hour: "Our service levels are now far superior to any other container terminal in the UK.

"Waiting times have halved and we have 20% more vehicles coming through than we did this time last year," he adds (CM 20 May).

John Williams from Maritime Transport, one of the largest hauliers servicing the terminal, agrees the service has improved dramatically: "With the introduction of a larger empty stacking area, separate export discharge facility and a much improved vehicle booking system (VBS), the service is currently first class.

"For two weeks the average turnaround time was no more than 30 minutes," he continues. "Last week the turnaround time was 45 minutes.

"The waiting time at our depot for VBS slots has been virtually eliminated, resulting in higher levels of productivity and customer service to our clients."
