Look out for Des 13-litre engine at the Hanover show. Andy Salter reports.

DAF IS EXPECTED to give a sneak preview of its eagerly awaited new 13-litre engine at the Hanover truck show.

The official launch is not scheduled until the second half of next year, but the Dutch company will use Hanover as an opportunity to offer a glimpse of its new engine.

Designed to replace the 12.6litre engine currently used in the XF and CF85 range, the allnew engine is expected to give performance and fuel efficiency advantages — expect top power to be in the region of 550hp.

Also at Hanover, Dal —like many other truck and engine builders — plans to release further details of its plans for the upcoming Euro-4 and Euro-5 emissions legislation. Like Mercedes, lveco, Volvo and Renault. Daf will rely on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet the tougher emission limit. In a recent letter to UK dealers. however, Dal indicated it will be in no hurry to offer the new technology.despite potential early demand from Germany.

"We will only deliver Euro-4 and/or Euro-5 vehicles to the market when the technology is matured and has proven its reliability," it says.

In the letter Daf marketing director Tony Pam told the UK dealer network: "The benefits of Maut [the German toll] incentive in our opinion do not justify taking extra risk with an advanced introduction of SCR technology."
