Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Unusual number plates and the GB national identification letters could be consigned to history from 1 September 2000 under plans being proposed by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.

Under the proposals. all vehicles would have to bear number plates with the conventional, clear style of letters. More unusual designs, such as italics, would be banned. The regulations would apply to vehicles first registered on or after 1 September 2000 and on other vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 1973, if their existing plates are replaced. Additionally the GB sticker would be changed to "UK".

A consultation process—which takes account of the views of bodies ranging from the Road Haulage Association to the Royal Mail about the proposals—will end ir October.
