II Police are searching for a truck driver who Is thought to have brought more than 100 illegal immigrants into the UK last week, dumping thorn in a remote lane in Kent.

In the early hours of 11 August, 117 Kosavar Albanians were picked up on the Isle of Grain, near Rochester. Kent, after residents alerted the police.

A Medway Police spokesman is unable to confirm how the immigrants had arrived in the UK but says: "Some of the immigrants claim they got here on the back at a lorry... and one or two residents say they heard a lorry engine at about that time."

A Home Office spokeswoman confirms the immigrants have been given temporary admission to the UK while their case for political asylum is considered.

Up to 1,000 immigrants are flooding through Kent ports every month, according to national press reports. Brenda Trench, Chairman of Kent County Council's Social Services Committee, says: "We have asked for a meeting with Barbara Roche (Home Office Minister) to discuss the situation."

• Last week reporters from the regional television news programme Newsroom SouthEast showed how Calais port authorities are falling to prevent immigrants from entering Britain. Immigrants were caught on film attempting to break into a truck while a security guard walked by just yards away.
