Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Vehicle Inspectorate has asked Commercial Motor to clarify some of the points contained in the recent tachograph feature "Time Bandits" (CM5-11 August).

Joe Harrison, senior traffic examiner for Essex 84, Hertfordshire, is concerned that the article "might give newish drivers the wrong impression".

So here again are some of the points listed in the article that needed further explanation.

s A driver must not drive for more than 10 hours in a 24hour period. This should read: A driver must not drive for more 10 hours in a driving period (driving period to be defined as between two daily rest periods or a daily and

weekly rest period).

s A driver must not be on duty for more than 11 hours. Under EC regulations there is no duty limit so this advice should be ignored.

s The maximum over six days is four days of nine hours' driving and two days of 10 hours... This sentence should have gone on to say in the first week of a two-week cycle where there is a fortnightly driving limit of 90 hours in any one fortnight s In a driving cycle exceeding four-and-a-half hours, a driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes off, with breaks not less than 15 minutes. This should read: In a driving cycle

exceeding four-and-a-half hours, a driver must take a 45minute break.
