Traffic officers from Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway, Lothian and the Borders joined forces for a two-day operation last week. It targeted HGVs using the A7 and country roads nearby.
The operation was in response to complaints about speeding trucks from parish councillor's in villages along the route, including Longtown, Canonby,
Blackford, Kirkandrews-on-Esk, West
linton, Rowanburn and Newcastleton.
Officers from Lothian and the Borders worked with Department of Transport Vehicle Inspectorate officials, who identified three trucks with overhanging loads and one tachograph offence.
A Cumbria Police spokesman confirms officers used both covert and "high visibility" methods of monitoring. A total of 173 speeders were caught, 123 of them being HGV drivers.
Around 20 of the lorries involved were timber trucks.
Inspector Keith Wilberforce, of the Cumbria force's mobile support group, says he was surprised at the number of speeding trucks uncovered by the exercise. 'We will return in the not too distant future to make sure that they have got the message," he warns.
