• The number of trucks on UK roads fell by 3.5% last year.

A Department of Transport goods vehicle survey shows that 415,000 trucks were in use at the end of 1992, compared with 430,000 a year earlier.

The 32.5-tonne class has been hit hardest with a 14% fall in numbers, But the trend is being bucked by 38-tonners with the LK pare rising by 3.6%.

A DOT spokesman says: "Obviously the recession has led to a slump in numbers since the 1989 peak. But the increase in 38tonners highlights the movement to bigger vehicles as hauliers aim to exploit the associated economies of scale."

The report also shows that the average age of UK attics._ ... is nearly five years, and 9.6% of them are more than a decade old.
