factory maintenance record and failure to stick to statements of intention has led to the authorisation on the licence held by Multiplies of Howden, Goole, being reduced by nine vehicles and five trailers.

North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Keith Waterworth also ruled that the licence should expire at the end of this year.

The company previously held a licence for 15 vehicles and 11 trailers ending in July 1995.

DOT vehicle examiner Clive Allison said between May 1990 and April 1993 there had been nine immediate prohibitions issued to the company's vehicles. A proportion of the prohibitions related to serious braking defects and a maintenance contract entered into after a public inquiry in 1990 had not been followed.

Waterworth also said the company had not responded to correspondence from the traffic area, which was irritating to him and his staff who had spent time writing letters to the company.

For Multiplies, Gary Hodgson said the public inquiry in 1990 showed a horrendous situation with a multitude of convictions for minor traffic matters. There had been no further convictions which showed there had been a complete turn round. Waterworth said it was the responsibility of a goods vehicle operator to operate vehicles in a roadworthy condition.

The TC told Multiplies that the buck for maintenance stops with the operator.
