MR. LESLIE M. PARKER. of the South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., has been appointed chief engineer of the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., in succession to MR. JAMES DAWSON, who will shortly retire. Before joining South Wales in 1946, Mr. Parker was with the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.

MR. T. D. BOTTERILL, for 23 years transport manager of Bowaters Services and Transport, Ltd., has relinquished that post, but continues as a director. He has been in the industry for 49 years. lie will continue to represent the Bowater Organization in the Traders Road Transport Association, of whose London and Horne Counties Division he is vice-chairman.

MR. JOHN FREEGUARD, Manager of the Western Division of British Road Services, recently made a presentation to MR. H. J. M. WESTLAKE to mark 50 years' service .in transport, Mr. Westlake, who is in charge of the office of the Oxford parcels depot of B.R.S.. joined Sutton and Co. in 1905 and continued in their service until 1947, when he was transferred to B.R.S. He is due to retire next year.

Ms. C. F. LawarNeF. Kim; has beets elected chairman of the Sheffield section of the Institute or Transport, with MR. G. J. easaoa (British Railways, Rotherham) as senior vice-chairman and MR. C. DARWENT (Sheffield Transport Department) as vice-chairman. MR. W. R. HOLLAND (Chesterfield Transport Department) has been elected honorary secretary and treasurer; MR. P. .1. CHESHIRE (Road Haulage Association). assistant secretary and treasurer, and MR. P. D. BAGGALEy (Sheffield Transport Department), honorary auditor.

• c2 MR. FRANK COUSINS has been appointed assistant general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union. Mr. Cousins, who took up his new post on Monday, was national secretary of the Union's commercial services group.

MR. WILLIAM HOLVOAK, Of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., who began work at Fort Dunlop 26 years ago on the shop floor as a tyre builder, has been appointed production manager at the factory. He succeeds the late MR. T. S. GARDNER.

MR. JAMES , I. PLENTY has been appointed manager of Merthyr Motors, Ltd., the transport organization of Hoover (Washing Machines), Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil. He was made deputy manager of Merthyr Motors when the company was formed in 1950.

MR. J R. CONDIE, executive engineer, has been appointed manager of the design department of F. Perkins, Ltd. This is a new appointment and supersedes that of chief engineer previously held by MR. A. W. GOSLING, who relinquishes the post. MR. J. Ci. DAWSON will become manager of the experimental department on September 1. M. M. VULLIAMY will continue as chief experiMental engineer. MR. W. SIR CHARLES BARTLETT

WE regret to record the death of SIR CHARLES BARTLETT. Sir Charles was the managing director of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd.. for 23 years, and chairman from 1953 until December last. After being wounded in the First World War he joined General Motors, Ltd., as a clerk. Five years later he was managing director. He became managing director of Vauxhall in 1930 when the company had 2.000 workers making 1,400 vehicles a year. When he retired in December last, there were 14.500 employees producing 130,000 vehicles a year.

From October, 1953, to June this year he was president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, and remained a vice-president until his death. He was also a one-time member of the Eastern Electricity Board. Sir Charles was 65.

DUTCH TRAMS TO GO MOTORBUSES with British running units are to replace trams now operating between Amsterdam and the seaside resort of Zanclvoort. The Dutch State Railways have ordered 65 sets of Leyland Tiger Cub running units, including the Leyland Pneumo-Cyclie gearbox, for incorporation in the buses, which will be chassisless vehicles designed for one-man operativn and will be built in Holland.
