ASTATEMENT of policy has been made by Mr. R. E. Smith, managing director, Hobbs Transmission, Ltd., a company in which the B.S.A. Co.. Ltd., have purchased a controlling interest for the Daimler Co., Ltd.

He states that the Hobbs transmission has been perfected, and reasearch into industrial applications is being actively pursued. The Daimler concern will manufacture the units and Hobbs will offer them to all home and overseas industries, either by providing complete units or negotiating non-exclusive licences to manufacture.

Vehicles of various makes have been fitted with Hobbs transmission and exhaustive tests have been carried out. "Whereas the design of the Hobbs transmission is to our satisfaction, it is. necessary to produce prototypes of each individual transmission unit owing to the need for designing special coupling and linkage mechanism to suit various engine units and linkages with accelerator mechanisms." says Mr. Smith.

"We are now in the position to undertake the design and manufacture of prototypes for individual applications, and to follow this through the testing stages and thence to , production, We have units even now for engines from 14. litres capacity up to large bus Diesel engines, and for many applications to static energizing units."

CHECK ON HAULIERS' LORRIES

TO enable the vehicles of haulier members to be identified when traffic is arranged and collected from clearing houses, -the National Conference of Road Transport Clearing Houses have prepared a membership card. One card, in a transparent envelope, is being issued for each of the

vehicles of a haulier member. The Conference recommend that drivers should produce the cards at the offices of clearing-house members when they apply for traffic.

KEENER COMPETITION?

INCREASED competition between road and rail in the north-east is foreshadowed by a plan to improve the railway sales organization in the North-Eastern Region. The railways aim to make more effective their contacts with trade, industry and the public, and to inaugurate an intensive drive to secure more traffic.

A meeting was recently held by the railways in Middlesbrough to discuss methods of securing more traffic.
