LEEDS CITY Council wants to increase its use of biomethane-fuelled lorries in an effort to insulate itself from rising fuel prices. Councillors will vote this week on whether it should spend £1.85m on new fleet vehicles for refuse collection, including eight powered by biomethane gas. If the plan goes ahead, it hopes to save money running the lorries.
The council already runs one truck on biomethane and says its carbon emissions are 60% lower compared with the rest of its fleet after travelling more than 20,000 miles. Up to eight gas and five diesel-powered vehicles would be working six days a week, replacing older vehicles.
Councillor Mark Dobson says: “By investing in these fuel-efficient vehicles, we will continue to deliver a reliable collection service, while also driving up our recycling rates.”
