Look past the furore over Euro-5 and there will be plenty of innovations and concepts at this year's CV Show. CM reviews the debutantes.

Next week's CV show is the ideal venue for manufacturers keen to showcase their latest offerings, but not all the latest models will be at Birmingham.

Renault Trucks is a case in point with its launch of the new construction option, the Lander, replacing the Premium in the multiaxle rigid class. The 8x4 won't be breaking cover at the show but, curiously, the 6x4 tractor will. It's a 450hp Euro-4 26-tonner.

At the lighter end of the Renault line-up the Maxity will be on display in chassis cab and Mascott; both in Euro-4.

Avia Trucks will launch its new range of 12tonners.The D120, powered by a Cummins ISBe 4.5-litre engine rated at 185hp, will be in urban artic form: the manufacturer hopes this will take it into new sectors, including the brewery industry. With the emphasis seemingly moving away from 7.5-tonners Avia, like its European competitors, is well placed to offer the heavier alternative. Isuzu Trucks is also placing more emphasis on heavier vehicles; it will show a 12-tormer that's due to arrive next yearThe show model is built to Japanese spec, but the cab and chassis should shed light on what we can expect in Furope. As marketing director Keith Child explains, the vehicle has been built for exhibition purposes:"Nonetheless, with the exception of the Japanese domestic market approved mirrors it is very representative of what ITUK will be selling in a year's time."

With Isuzu championing its lightweight credentials at 12 tonnes, Child stresses the payload advantage it offers over other manufacturers' equivalent models isn't at the expense of strength or durability.

In more specialist markets Mitsubishi will be launching the Faso 7.5-tonner in 4x4 guise.

VolvoTrucks will have new models and drivelines on show at Birminehamlbe latest 540hp FH16 will be shown alongside by the FL and FL line-ups that were launched last summer, The show model FH16 540 will be a 4x2 with the Globetrotter XL cab decked out in Prestige trim featuring leather upholstery. heated and vented seats and climate control. It hits Furo-4 via SCR technology, and grunt isn't an issue with peak torque of 2,600Nm. Green issues remain at centre stage, with the Swedish manufacturer demonstrating its hybrid diesel-electric D7 engine. Volvos' test results indicate that it uses 35% less fuel with reduced noise and emissions.

And still on the environment, the government's decision to reward Euro-5 purchasers comes as good new for Iveco, which had already decided to standardise on Euro-5 engines, as of 1 April. The Stralis was recently launched in Italy and the NEC will mark its European show debut.

The Italians will have two Euro-5 versions on display, majoring the new model's longdistance and fleet aspects.

The range-topping AS440 6x2 tractor unit, for long distance UK and international haulage operations, has the 12.8-litre Cursor 13 engine rated at 560hp and sports the new Super3cab, an option which the previous lineup lacked. The specification also includes air-con, leather seats, sat-nay and 12-speed automated EuroTronic gearbox with overdrive top gear. Its fleet alternative is the AT440 4x2 tractor unit with 10.3-litre 420hp Cursor 10 engine, a 12-speed automated EuroTronic gearbox, high roof and twin bunks. Looking to build on its successful introduction into the British market, Hino will show 25 trucks including 20 bodied and liveried tippers in an outside display Its emphasis will be on the Euro-4 EGR driveline.
