Liverpool Port refutes haulier's claims of 'chaos'

THE PORT OF Liverpool has put up a robust defence against accusations by a haulier that queues and waiting times have made it as bad as Southampton Container Terminal was several years ago.
Two weeks ago, the Mersey port revealed it is investing £90m into its biggest expansion programme for 40 years (CM 5 April). But McGarrie Transport describes the current situation for container drivers as "just chaos".
John McGarrie welcomes the news that the port is expanding, but says he is forced to wait for up to three hours when he delivers there and believes there aren't enough straddle workers to deal with the containers. But port marketing director, Frank Robotham, denies there is a crisis. He admits engineering work has put pressure on the terminal but denies that delays have been occurring for months, or that it is understaffed.
