as a tool to do a particular job" John Ash

Commercial Vehicle Contracts, based at Thame, is Daf's finance arm; it handles a large proportion of the vehicles returned after their leases or hire deals have expired. General manager John Ash says: "The Daf 75 tractor is usually bought as a tool to do a particular job. Where the 85 Series may have a short first life of two to three years, the average first life for the 75CF tractor is more likely to be about five years. As such it will be well used, having covered 100,000 to 150,000 miles a year.

"Availability of any used model depends on the numbers sold originally. Over the past five years Daf has sold 1,250 75 Series tractive units. That compares with just about one fifth of the number of the more powerful 85 Series tractive units sold in the same period.

"There is not a huge demand for used low-powered fleet tractors and, because of its long first life with the 75CF tractor, it's a case of availability often exceeding demand. We don't retail; we sell to Daf dealers and through auctions. Some even go for export. Some carry on as tractive units while others are stretched and become high-powered rigids. Prices are closely aligned to book values."
