EATON is to build a new lorry transmission plant at Walkden near Manchester on the site of the factory destroyed by fire in September 1979.

Announcing this, John S. Rodewig, vice-president truck components (Europe), said that in addition to the reinvestment at Manchester, the European transmission division will spend some £3.5m at its Basingstoke plant and over Elm at St Nazaire in France.

Expected to be completed by October 1981, the Manchester plant will provide some 500 production jobs concentrating on Fuller twincountershaft transmissions.
