Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FIRST Cummins 250 turbopowered Foden eight wheel 30-ton gross rigid chassis is now being prepared for service with Hinckleys Ltd, Congleton. This is the first use of this engine type in any make of rigid chassis.

Fitted with a tipping Metalair tank body and a full tank of fuel, the vehicle has an un laden weight of only 10,400kg (10.24 tons) allowing a payload of 20,090kg (19.77 tons).

Hinckleys specified the 250 turbo engine as much of the company's work is trans Pennine. "With shorter driving hours we need greater power for faster journey times", commented Phil Clowes, transport director.

Installed in the Foden, the 250 turbo produces a maxi mum net output of 173kW (232.5bhp) at 1900rpm with a max torque of 1068Nm (788 lbft).

To carry the same payload as a Gardnerpowered Foden chassis, Hinckleys are using some weight-saving features on the 260kg (5cwt) heavier Cummins chassis. Plastic mudguards, alloy mounting and tipping bracketry, alloy battery carriers and Lucas lightweight low-maintenance batteries have all been specified.

Fodens FF20 rubber rear bogie suspension is used — it has 17 per cent better roll stiffness than conventional steel springing, and Mr Clowes anticipates reduced tank maintenance because of the better ride in the unladen state. Another change from the Hinckley standard specification is the use of a Fuller 9509 nine-speed gearbox with the latest type of Fuller full torque pto.

Using a transmission isolator, the bottom four ratios of the gearbox can be used to give a choice of four power take-off ratios, allowing the driver to select the most suitable pto ratio for the fastest discharge.

The installation of the 250 turbo in the Foden Haulm aster chassis uses the rearmost side mounting for the engine's Holset HC3 turbo, and the 250 fits comfortably under the Foden 210 composite cab giving plenty of clearance between the rear of the engine and the standard Foden mounting position for the single ram Edbro ED16/4 tipping gear.

As with the other Haulmster eight-wheelers, the 250 turbo chassis has a front-mounted horizontal exhaust layout. Basic Haulmaster chassis and driveline specification remains the same.
