Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The appeal of Leonard Stubbs and Co., Ltd., Runcorn, against the granting of an A licence by the NorthWestern Licensing Authority to Messrs. Jackson and Ellis, Runcorn, which ',via be heard at Liverpool, on May 23, is unusually interesting, being against the granting of claimed, as well as discretionary, tonnage.

The appellant will submit that Messrs. Jackson and Ellis's claimed tonnage included a private car, weighing 35 cwt., which was not, during the basic year, or at all, the property of the firm and was not used by them for carrying goods during the basic year. It will also be claimed that Messrs.

ackson and Ellis made an incorrect statement to the Licensing Authority regarding the ownership and use of the car, and that the previous conduct of the firm was such that the application should not have been granted.

Messrs. Jackson and Ellis were allowed 35 tons.

Certain appeals by David Auld and Co. and others, against the granting of claimed tonnage to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Co., were dismissed by the Appeal Tribunal, on the ground that it had no jurisdiction to entertain them.

M.T.A. and Price-cutting Prevention.

The first council meeting of the Motor Trade Association was held, a few days ago, at its new offices at Birmingham, both manufacturers and retailers being represented. Amongst those present were Sir Herbert Austin. K.B.E., and Messrs. Siddeley, Riley and Lancliester, as well as chiefs of over 200 distributing agents from all parts of the country.

In the course of a speeclt, Mr. W. M. W. Thomas, the president, said that "there can hardly be a quicker way for the country to slide hack into a depression than by unsound selling and internecine price-cutting."

During the past year, the Awociation has been reconstituted, in order to make more effective the suppression of unsound trading methods, such as price-cutting and, particularly, overallowances on secondhand vehicles taken in part exchange for new machines.

Sentinel Steam Wagon Doing Well in America.

The Sentinel S6 steam wagon, which, as already mentioned in our columns, was shipped to the Pocahontas Coal Co., of New Bedford, Mass., has re

cently undergone successful trials and is now in regular daily service. The vehicle makes three return trips each day from New Bedford to the Taunton Gas Works, laden with 10 tons of coal, and it is said that its operation is proving most economical and that the journeys are being made in faster time than with petrol vehicles. The daily mileage is 132, much of which is accomplished over adverse gradients. A picture on this page shows the -vehicle in the course of its daily duties. CONSIDERATIONS IN EXTENDING HAULIER'S RADIUS.

The question of whether a Welsh coastal resort had adequate furnitureremoval facilities was debated before Mr. A. T. James, K.C., the South Waljs Licensing Authority, at Bridgencl.

Mr. W. Evans, of Porthcawl, applied for an increase in his haulage radius from 15 to 25 miles, and for a radius of more than 25 miles for a new large vehicle which he proposed to buy for furniture removals, in. addition to general haulage.

The applicant said that he was often asked to remove furniture from Porthcawl to such places as Cardiff, but owing to the limited .radius limitation he was unable to do so, and cOntractors from Other towns took the work and brought vehicles into Porthcawl.

Mr. James said that he had to consider not whether the applicant was losing business, but whether that work was being done satisfactorily by other contractors, who would lose it if the applicant's claim was granted. Were there reasonable facilities for local people was also a question for . consideration. Mr. James reserved his decision.
