Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

YOU RECENTLY published my letter regarding Scania cabs (CM 31 July). With fuel consumption, I think that if horsepower is kept constant as one moves from Euro3 to Euro-4, and on to Euro-5. the mpg gets worse: and I wonder at what point environmental emissions benefits are cancelled out by higher fuel consumption. When one talks to manufactures or dealers about mpg, they get a bit vague. I realise that mpg varies depending on driving style, maintenance, type of work etc.

Before buying my unit. I budgeted on 7mpg, hoping to get nearer 8mpg, and I'm averaging 7.2mpg the lower end of my expectations.

I'm using a R480 Highline with Opticruise pulling a Fruehauf bathtub. It could be the Opticruise that's the problem or maybe the trailer as someone suggested that it gives me a mpg penalty of 0.5mpg compared to a plank sider, so a different trailer may put me nearer to where I would like to be, albeit with a payload penalty.

I welcome figures from other hauliers on mpg, and people are welcome to email me the info and I'll put it on a spreadsheet and produce a chart. I'm only interested in bulk tippers running at 44f gross and need to know unit model. registration and year, engine size, euro rating and trailer type.
