Mermaid reveals that two thirds of Lorries have faults

ALMOST TWO-THIRDS of lorries were discovered to have faults in roadside checks carried out across the country as part of Operation Mermaid.

The roads of Scotland and Northamptonshire were targeted in the crackdown. with Vosa undertaking random HGV inspections alongside customs officials and the police.

Of the 86 CVs and HGVs that Strathclyde Police inspected on the A8 near Bargeddie. Glasgow, on 4 September, 46 were cleared. In the same week on the Ml at Crick, Northamptonshire Police found two thirds of HGVs — 18 out of 27— to be unsafe or illegal.

Offences included overloading, mechanical defects and tachographs not being up to date.

Chief Inspector Donna Henderson, head of road policing at Strathclyde Police, says: "It is an important opportunity to reinforce the idea that faulty trucks can have tragic consequences as well as ensure that criminals using vehicles are being targeted."
