IAA show at Hannover

By Colin Barnett NEXT THURSDAY (25 September) is the first public day of Europe's premier CV show, IAA at Hannover. which runs until 2 October. For many observers, the highlight will be the results of the Truck and Van of the Year contests (see CM 4 September for the contenders).

Beyond the awards festivities. it doesn't take a genius to work out that environmental issues are going to be high on the agenda. The home side will be led by Daimler's traditionally massive presence, with the latest Mercedes-Benz Actros models for on and off the highway taking a starring role.

In probably the largest ever CV alternative fuel development exercise, hybrid versions of the Axor and Vito will be joining the Sprinter, Atego and Mitsubishi Fuso Canter models already undergoing customer trials.

Also on home turf. MAN will be showing its new EGR-equipped E5 and EEV engines, while the facelifted TGL and TGM light and middleweights will be making their first public appearance. Iveco promises a record assembly of environmentally friendly products. Pride of the stand will be the new Eurocargo. including the global launch of the 4x4 version. A Stralis All Black concept truck with second-generation Active Cruise Control, Active Lane Departure System and ESP will put the focus on safety, while a lightweight Stralis tractor will be sampling market response.

Also following a lightweight theme, Volvo will be showing an EM tractor powered by a new 11-litre which claims a 140kg advantage over the 13-litre. The heavily revised FH cab makes its show debut and the world's first in-service hybrid refuse collection vehicle can be seen.

Renault's product offering will feature driver environment advances across the range, led by the revised Magnum interior.

Behind the scenes, the Optifuel concept, a fuel-saving programme with three elements — driveline speccing, monitoring and driver training— will be launched.

See CM next week for a full IAA report.
