MIDLANDS BRS driver Roy Withers scooped the top prize at Cranfield last Sunday to become the 1982 Commercial Motor Lorry Driver of the Year.

Roy, who was champion in 1977 and one of the eight class winners last year, was a clear winner, beating second place man Edward Trail of Esso with 99 fewer penalty points. Admitting that he had been putting in a little practice during the last few days, Roy Withers commented after his victory: "It gets harder every year."

• This was a particularly good year for Midlands BRS; no fewer than three of the eight class winners at Cranfield on Sunday came from the company.
