in the design of urban road vehicles for the Minister of Transport has now been .appointed and has started work. It is receiving general direction from a steering group, headed by Sir Harold Roxbee Cox, and including leading figures in the motor industry. Composition of the working group is: Mr. A. E. Cooke (Vauxhall Motors Ltd.), Mr. R. A. Fryars (Leyland Group), Mr. C. A. Griffin (British Motor Corporation), Mr. G. Grime (Road Research Laboratory), Mr. R. H. MacMillan .(Motor Industry Research Association), Mrs. B. Martin (Lecturer in Sociology, Bedford College), Dr. G. C. Williams (Ricardo and Co.), Mr. E. Woodbridge (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), Mr. J. T. Duff and Mr. H. Perring (Ministry of Transport). Mr. J. Garlick, of the Ministry, is chairman of the group, and Mr. J. W. Furness secretary.

At a meeting last week of the Middlesbrough Corporation transport committee tributes were paid to Mr. Frank Lythgoe, the department's .transport manager, who is to retire at the end of the month after 30 years' service with the Corporation.

The London and Home Counties area committee of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association has unanimously agreed that the present assistant secretary, Mr. W. A. Webb, be appointed secretary of the area from October 1. The duties of the area secretary have previously been undertaken by Mr. F. A. Walker, the national secretary. Mr, W. A. Webb has been on the staff of the Association since it was first founded in 1945, and was appointed assistant secretary in 1961.

Mr. G. J. Dickins, London Transport traffic officer (central buses), is to retire on September 30. He has completed more than 50 years in public transport, having joined the London Electric Railway company as junior clerk in 1913. Mr. Dickins transferred to the London General Omnibus company as a traffic observer in 1926 and served in the country bus and coach department from the formation of Green Line Coaches in 1930 until 1946. After various other appointments he became traffic development officer in 1954 and took up his present position in 1962. Mr. Dickins is to be succeeded by Mr. E. R. Ellen, at present divisional superintendent, south division (central buses). Mr. Ellen, who is 45, joined London TranspOrt in 1947.

Mr. R. J. Tubb has been appointed senior technical representative (fuel injection) for Tecalemit (Developments) Ltd., Plymouth. He was previously with Solex Ltd. and the Ford Motor company. Mr. George W. Robb is to succeed Mr. R. Forrester as general manager of W. Alexander arid Sons (Fife) Ltd, when the latter retires at the end of the year. Mr. Robb is a former employee of the company. He served his apprenticeship and received his early training in the industry with the old S.M.T. Co. Ltd. in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. Mr. _Robb left the position of general manager of St. Helens Transport in 1945 to take over his present post as manager of the City Tramways Co., Cape Town. South Africa. where he is responsible for the operation of a fleet of 365 buses, Mr. Rex A. Sebastian has been appointed to the newly created position of vice-president, international operations, with Cummins Diesel International Ltd. He will report to Mr. Reece Hatcbitt, senior vice president international of • Cummins Engine Co. Inc. Between 1960 and 1963 Mr. Sebastian was managing director of the wholly owned subsidiary Cummins Engine Co. Ltd., of Shotts, Lanarkshire.

Mr. Allan Rowntree, director and general manager of Hepworth and Grandage (Yeadon) Ltd., has been appointed to the main board of the Hepworth and Grandage Ltd. group of companies.

Mr. J. W. Ramsay, formerly Avon area sales manager for North London, has been appointed general manager and a director of the Normeir Tyre Co. Ltd. Mr. D. B. Allard, who was Avon's West London district manager, is now area sales manager, North London. Mr. K. R. Arnold, who joined the company in 1952, has been promoted West London district manager in succession to Mr. Allard. Mr. N. M. Hill has been appointed production manager and Mr. G. P. Gibbons chief designer of Dennis Brothers Ltd., of Guildford, Surrey. Mr. Hill joins the company from Leyland Motors Ltd.; where he had served for tinny years as works superintendent. Mr. Gibbons was formerly chief designer (commercial vehicle brake (disc) division) of the Dunlop rubber company. Mr. H. Durham joins Dennis Brothers as sales engineer covering the East Midlands.

Mr. William M. Gibbs has been appointed to the board of directors of .1. Gibbs Ltd., of Feltham, Middlesex. Mr. Gibbs, the elder son of Mr. Murray' M. Gibbs, was indentured as an automobile engineering apprentice under the Austin Motor company's training scheme for motor trade executives. Like his cousin, Mr. Donald R. Gibbs, William represents the fifth generation of Gibbs to direct the company's affairs.

The Castrol Group have appointed three senior executives to the newly created positions of overseas controllers. These executives, with their stalls, replace the former Castrol overseas division at the Group's London headquarters. Mr. R. Layet becomes principal overseas controller and Mr. K. D. Torrens and Mr. R. J. Street become overseas controllers. Mr. F. W. Arrowsmitb and Mr. L. A. Storrar are appointed assistants to the overseas controllers.

Mr. F. W. J. Scoff,currently general manager in charge of retail sales, ShellMex and B.P. Ltd., is relinquishing his responsibility for the retail market in order to undertake a special assignment in connection with the company's reorganization. Mr. B. J. Bowden has been appointed general manager, with the responsibility for retail sales.

Mr. Ennifer, of Doncaster, Yorks, for inun y years managingdirector of Blue Ensign Coaches Ltd., Doncaster, died at his home at the age of 83.
