,ZPEAK1NG at the Municipal Passenger Transport Association Conference
n Blackpool this week, the 'president, khderman H. C. Mullett, chairman of hesterfield Corporation transport cornnittee, said that the past year was one if notable development. During the ,ear the Buchanan and Phelps Brown eports had been published and he asked f it was possible that the importance of mblic transport was at last being ecognized.
However, there -had not been much .hange at local level and there was a onstant battle with planning authorities
n many quarters, he said. In many ascs plans for redevelopment that were rt existence two years ago were going hrough .without any modifications in line with the recommendations of the luchanan Report. There was a need for nuch more forthright guidance from the lovernment.
Alderman Mullett said that the smaller indertakings had many advantages, paricufarly with regard to labour relations whilst on the other hand a multiplicity of operators in urban areas might be out of date. . He called for co-ordinated ransport with rail as well as road and with subsidies if necessary. He felt that he Association was no further forward han in 1947, and asked how Much longer could municipal transport operate on the oresent basis.
