A MEMBERSHIP of over 50 opera

tors, representing some 80 per cent of the vehicle tonnage employed in the Heavy Woollen District, is claimed by the Bradford and District Hauliers' Federation which was founded a year ago. The number of vehicles owned by members is now in excess of 500.

The policy of the Federation during the past 12 months has been directed to the stabilization of wool haulage rates and to the elimination of the uneconomic working which formerly had a serious effect on road transport conditions in the area. Officials of the B. and D.H.F. say that their objective is to ensure that economic charges are made so that the replacement of vehicles, and the provision of spare components, shall not constitute a financial problem for the operator.

c18 An approach was made last week to the Yorkshire Licensing Authority with a view to arranging for a senior representative of the Ministry of Transport to meet a delegation from the Federation. The object is to discuss various operating problems, particularly the matter of rate quoting because of its immediate influence on the weight of the loads carried and on the mechanical condition of the various fleets.

Mr. F. D. Harris, the Federation's secretary, told The Commercial Motor that his organization deplored the recent publicity regarding poor maintenance standards of transport vehicles and contended that many such problems arise as a result of hauliers being forced by competition to keep their charges at uneconomic levels.
