REMINDERS SENT TO DISQUALIFIED DRIVERS

AT Birmingham Court, on Monday, the Stipendary (Mr. J. F. Mil ward) criticize.d the city council's motor taxation department for sending drivinglicence renewal reminders to persons who had been disqualified by the courts from driving.

He had before him the case of a man who had been disqualified from driving for 12 months and, having received a reminder from the taxation department that his driving licence was due for renewal, filled in the application form which accompanied the reminder and was then charged with an offence.

The Stipendary dismissed a summons brought against the man for knowingly making a false statement in order to obtain a driving licence, and gave him an absolute discharge on a second summons that he applied for a licence while being disqualified.

The Stipendary was told that no special list of disqualified persons was kept in the taxation office and that the Licence reminders were sent out to all licence holders, irrespective of whether they were licensed to drive or not.

He remarked: " The sooner another system is adopted the better. I think it is very wrong that reminders should be sent out to persons who have been disqualified."
