In an application, on Monday, by Messrs. G. G. Clancy, of Gorton, Manchester, for the restoration of authorized tonnage, Mr. P. Kershaw (for the L.M.S. Railway Co.) required proof of need, and Sir William Hart, NorthWestern Deputy Licensing Authority, concurred.

Mr. G. G. Clancy stated that in order better to serve housing estates where there were no roads suitable for heavy vehicles, he substituted a 3i-ton lorry for a 51}-tonner, and desired a 2-ton trailer to make up the tonnage. At the time of his original application he liarLI3 vehicles and 12 trailers.

Sir William Hart adjourned the hearing in order that accounts for each month since 1932 might be prepared to substantiate Mr. Clarity's evidence that traffic reached 18,000 ;tons per quarter in June last and showed steady growth from 1932.

Mr. Howard Robinson, as the accredited representative Of the applicant, agreed to supply the figures, but urged that it was a new form of opposition to an application merely for the maintenance of authorized tonnage.

Big Autumn Programme for , Mane.lkester C.M.U.A.

A programme of, meetings to be held during the autumn has been .mapped out by the C.M.U.A. Manchester Area. This month meetings are being held at Crewe, Buxton, Macclesfield, Stockport, Glossop, Manchester, Narthwich and Tarporley. Next month, there will be meetings at Stalybridge. Hyde, Buxton, New Mills, Macclesfield, Crewe and Manchester.

In November, the annual hot-pot supper will be held in Manchester, in addition to meetings at Buxton, Macclesfield, Crewe, Stockport and Glossop.

Two special events are projected for January. . There will be a mass meeting on January 6, whilst the other gathering will be the annual meeting of the C.M.U.A. in the area. .

• Laystall Expansion in the North.

The steady growth in the North of England of the business of the Laystall Motor Engineering Works, Ltd., has necessitated the removal of its works from Fontenoy Street to larger premises in Collingwood Street, Liverpool, where much more floor space is available to accommodate the additional plant necessary. The new works cover most of the well-known Laystall activities. A feature is also made of the rapid remetalling of bearings.

State Onus for Mersey Tunnel?

Mersey Tunnel joint Committee is asking the Minister of Transport to receive a deputation on the question of the Government taking over the financial liability for the tunnel.
