Enthusiastic Support of our Scheme for Obtaining Ideas for Reducing Road Dangers— The Effect of our Offer of £250 in Awards.

Ofilt READERS have entered with enthusiasm into the spirit of the offer which has been made by the proprietors ,:i The Commercial Motor and its associated journals, under which the sum of £250 has been allocated for distribution as awards to contributors of ideas which, in the opinion of the Editors of The Commercial Votor, The Motor; The Light Car and Cyclecar, and Motor Cycling, wil tend to a lessening of the number of road accidents which are now all too, prevalent.

Power-driven vehicles come in for an undue share of the blame for these accidents, but a curious light has been thrown upon the statistics only in the past few clays. If the average observant person were asked if it were usual to see horses ridden or led in London's streets, he would say, "Except for the mounted police, there is very little movement of ridden or led horses in London." Yet the published statistics show that 42 accidents (one of which was fatal) through led or ridden horses occurred in the Metropolis in three months. In comparison, all other figures seem not excessive.

We hold the view, however, that accidents must not be regarded as inevitable. They are all Avoidable by • one ineabs or another. We ask our readers to suggest these means. They can apply to road construction, vehicle design and equipment, alterations in the law and in the habits and customs 4.)f every class of road user. Whilst there is no limit to the character or number of suggestions submitted by a reader, we ask that letters shall be brief and very clearly state the name and address•of the writer. The £250 will be distributed in the following manner:-10 awards of 10 each ; 15 awards of £5 each ; 25 awards of £1 each ; and 100 awards of 10s. each.

• We reproduce below further letters whieh have reached us from important users of commercial motor vehicles, dealing with the methods adopted and advocated by them for encouraging careful and considerate driving on the part of their employees.
