Now the holiday season is over light CV buyers

are ready to buy, reports Manheim Auctions'

commercial vehicle sales director Alex Wright.

We are enjoying a very strong and healthy used light CV market at present. Stock levels in general are holding steady and buyers are back in full force now the holiday season has ended.

In the car-derived sector we've sold a selection of nonwhite Vauxhall Combos at very reasonable prices. In a variety of conditions and with mileages varying from 30,000 to 60,000 miles, they are selling for as little as £2,300 on an 04 plate. Newer Combos with the 1.3 CDT' engine and side loading doors are selling well, for example a 2005/55, 15,000-mile model sold for £4,750, making £750 above book price. Ford Ka petrol vans are coming up for sale and are proving very popular. This could be due to them being relatively inexpensive a 30,000-mile,1.3-litre 2002/52 model sold for £1,450.

Still in the car-derived sector, short-wheelbase. Ford Connects are holding their value, coming in at around book price. hi the small panel van sector, the Volkswagen Caddy is starting to appear at auction and strong demand for this vehicle is keeping sale prices high.

The VW Transporter and Mercedes Vito remain as popular as ever with dealers and a shortage of these is keeping prices high. Although numbers of Vauxhall Vivaros have increased in recent weeks, they continue to achieve good prices and condition seems to override mileage as the most important factor. There is still plenty of stock in the large panel van sector, with low-mileage vehicles achieving the highest prices.A new-look, 32,000-mile Mercedes Sprinter LWB 311 on a 2006/06 plate was sold at one of our light CV auction sites recently and, even with at least £800-worth of damage, it sold for £4,100 above book price, making £15,700.

Manheim's Gloucester site recently sold an LPG/petrol Mercedes Sprinter 314 L/H with 116,000 miles on a 2005/54 plate for £6,800, proving there is a market for these vehicles, albeit an unpredictable one.The proposed removal of the congestion charge concession for LPG vehicles may reduce demand for these vehicles in the future, but Manheim believes small businesses will still run LPG vehicles to benefit from the huge reduction on fuel costs.

We are seeing very few Luton vans coming into the auction hall. When they do, bidding is always fierce, leading to high sale prices, such as a Vauxhall Movano glass fibre Luton with 69,000 miles on a 2004/04 plate that sold for £6,900, £550 above book price.

The 4x4 market remains healthy, but the continuing shortage of stock means vehicles are almost guaranteed to sell first time. Two good examples are the Ford Ranger 2.5TD double cab with 77,000 miles on an 2002/52 plate that sold for £100 over the book price at £4,050, and a 24,000-mile Nissan Navara 2.5TD double cab 2005/05, which sold for £11,650 -making £1,300 above book price. •
