Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE NUMBER of transport companies going bust is continuing to rise, with 7% more firms going under in the third quarter of 2007 compared with 2006.

The figures, from analyst Equifax, show 231 operators failed, against 216 in Q3/2006. The year-on-year figures worsened after the first quarter, when there were 19% fewer failures than in 2006.

With three quarters of the year gone there are still slightly fewer transport and communications company failures this year than last (692, compared with 695). But if the trend continues to the end of the year there will be more business failures than in 2006.

Equifax follows Insolvency Service practice by listing haulage firms under the Transport and Communications category.
