Ongoing delays in the launch of the Traffic Area Office twork's TAN21 computer system ( CM 11-17 Oct) are now using problems with the new-style registration plates: they a not compatible with the existing computer system.

Traffic area staff at two offices have been forced to issue licences with manually written registration numbers cause their computers cannot handle the new-style index rnbers which came in on 1 September—they are more easread by roadside camera systems.

The DVLA announced the changes last April, and the kN21 computer system, which can handle the new plates, as to come on line in August—in plenty of time to cope with e new plates. But while staff at the Edinburgh, Eastbourne, istol and Cambridge offices have started using the TAN21 istem, their colleagues in Leeds and Birmingham are still 3 ing the old computers and have to write out discs by hand. We had to take a decision on whether spending public ioney on upgrading the old system that was about to be lased out was in the public interest," says a DoT spokesman. kt the last two offices to get the system, staff are using a coprate code which ties up the real registration plate on the sys3M. Anyone getting stopped shouldn't have a problem."

Despite assurances that the system would not be rolled ut across the rest of the country until staff at the dinburgh office had ironed out any problems, those at the ristol Traffic Area Office are not happy with it.
